Wireless technology shows no sign of slowing down in its development. Its quite the opposite actually;
For some time we have been familiar with high capacity backhaul links, particularly in the mobile sector. These links, typically microwave and 10 gig, have replaced more expensive fibre runs throughout the outer reaches of the mobile network. Whilst this technology has been cost effective for the larger telcos when compared with fibre transmission, it has not translated to a commercially viable link to a residential client in the fixed wireless space. That is not until now….
For those businesses like OCB that have an existing fixed wireless network with a fibre backbone, the technology has just become very interesting. The fixed wireless space has always had many advantages in terms of speed of roll-out and access to more remote clients, but it has had its own issues to deal with.
How can we increase speeds to those of FTTH (fibre to the Home)? How can we avoid the intermittent interference prevalent in the congested 5 Ghz public spectrum? How can we alleviate the line of sight requirement? These questions have been addressed by a multitude of manufacturers around the world, resulting in commercially viable fixed wireless technology delivering speeds way in excess of the NBN and with a sensible cost of acquisition.
A very well designed fibre backbone and data centre network access is still mandatory, but with that already in place, final mile transmission technology is now ready to launch the next generation of “Wireless Wire” capability. This capability will see consumers enjoying 200 megabit symmetrical services through line of sight technology, in a different spectrum to the currently over subscribed 5Ghz. At OCB we expect to be delivering this technology within the next few months, and whilst we are looking forward to offering businesses in particular competitive pricing for high speed services, we are also looking forward to 2019 and coupling all these advances with some more new technology, enabling us to bend the rules of physics, quite literally by adopting non line of sight equipment.
Fibre to the point of presence is crucial, beyond that, we are struggling to see why we would engage in digging up streets at all.
