Next generation fixed wireless

Fixed wireless technology is being heavily invested in by the major Telcos globally as the physics in 5G and 5G fixed wireless access (5G FWA) converge. Next generation mobile services will be delivered through 5G technology, as will next generation fixed wireless services.

The benefits of Fixed Wireless

One of the key benefits of the current fixed wireless offering deployed by companies like Our Community Broadband (OCB), is that it enables the establishment of quick and cheap broadband services in areas that have limited access to or poor quality of fixed line services. Currently, these fixed wireless services need engineering at the customer end and whilst this is less expensive than civil works for fixed line services, it is still a cost.

5G FWA will not require any engineering input at the customer end, rather the subscriber will be able to self-install customer premises equipment and away they go. It is estimated that this innovation alone will reduce the cost of “final mile” subscriber delivery by approximately 40% when compared to the physical fibre approach, already abandoned as too expensive in Australia.

Bridging the divide between metro and rural user satisfaction

5G FWA is widely forecasted to have a significant impact on all markets globally, even mature markets such as the US, where the disparity between broadband accessibility (and quality) between the metro and rural areas is huge. This disparity is even more pronounced in Australia, yet the NBN solution is to continue to push final mile solutions through ageing and corroded underground copper cables.

This policy of fibre to the node across non-metro Australia seems even less sensible when considering the performance comparisons; the 5G FWA protocol can already deliver a level of service comparable to a fibre to the home network and is capable of delivering speeds far greater than current broadband standards. Initial trials in the UK have reported a range of download speeds between 10 and 25 gigabits per second. A far cry from the performance we “enjoy” today. Given this capability and improved deployment cost, we should expect to see 5G FWA bring our rural communities into the 21st Century but just as importantly we will see competition in the more built up and densely populated areas. This, of course, will lead to lower prices and improved services for the end user.

OCB is preparing for a Sunshine coast roll out

OCB is committed to bringing high speed broadband to all areas of the Sunshine Coast and is already preparing for the availability of the 5G FWA.  With our network of strategically placed distribution points and multiple fibre ingress points, we will be able to roll out new technology as soon as it’s becomes available.  Lightening speed implementation of new technology is just one of the benefits of being a small focused local business.

Get connected

To enable an OCB service to your home and business does currently require an installation – but it’s not that expensive, and we often have FREE installation offers on certain plans.

To find out if our service is available now at your place, complete your details HERE and we will get back to you within 24 hours (excluding weekends).
